L-tryptophan for mood and sleep
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that your body cannot produce itself. You must obtain it through food or supplements. This amino acid is the building block for serotonin, also known as the "happiness hormone," and indirectly also for melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle.
From tryptophan to serotonin
The conversion process occurs in steps: L-tryptophan is first converted to 5-HTP, which is then converted to serotonin. Serotonin influences your mood, emotions, appetite and self-confidence. When it gets dark, your body converts serotonin into melatonin, making you sleepy and helping you fall asleep.
This supplement contains vitamin B6 alongside 400 mg of L-tryptophan. This vitamin is essential for the conversion of L-tryptophan to serotonin. Without sufficient B6, your body cannot efficiently utilize the amino acid. Additionally, vitamin B6 contributes to normal nervous system function and helps reduce fatigue.
When to use L-tryptophan?
L-tryptophan can provide support for sleep problems, when you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. It can also help when you feel down or emotionally out of balance. Some people use it after an intensive period or night out to restore serotonin levels.
For sleep support, take the capsules 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, preferably on an empty stomach with fruit juice. The sugars in fruit juice help L-tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier. With 90 capsules of 400 mg, you have an ample supply for daily use for one and a half to three months, depending on your personal dosage.
